When and How did the Natural Method start? - Page 2 Empty Direct Method

Post  Juanito23 Thu Aug 04, 2011 9:27 pm

Towards the end of the late 1800s, a revolution in language teaching philosophy took place that is seen by many as the dawn of modern foreign language teaching. The method became very popular during the first quarter of the 20th century, especially in private language schools in Europe where highly motivated students could study new languages and not need to travel far in order to try them out and apply them communicatively. One of the most famous advocates of the Direct Method was the German Charles Berlitz, whose schools and Berlitz Method are now world-renowned. It is true that direct method is criticized a lot, but there is no doubt its a good method.

the term natural emphasizes that the principles behind the natural approach are belived to conform to the naturalistic principles found in succesful seco aquisition. One may think thaht the natural aproach and the natural method are similar. the natural method or direct method and the approach differ in that the former lays more emphasis on teahcer monologues, formal question and answers, and error correction. Krashen and the natural approach is in many ways the natural, direct method rediscovered it is similar toother communicative approaches being today. At the risk of oversimplifying, it was a reaction against the Grammar Translation method, and for that reason didn't focus on grammar and disallowed the first language.

Hi sis...jejeje.....
Well, to answer the question "When and how did the Natural method start?, I'm going to tell you that it started since the Roman civilisation, when teenagers wanted to learn a L2, in this case Greek, and with the normands' children who travelled to France to learn French being wth the native speakers.
Now, talking about the Input, Krashen, onto his Monitor Model Theory, he explains that a comprehensible input should be provide and shoul be not grammatically sequenced. People acquire language best by understanding input that is a little above their present level of
competence. This is his "Input Hypothesis".

Direct Method is used in many language institutions to teach their students the new language in the most natural way. They focus on making the students develop their speaking and then they introduce them in writing and reading. So these institutions use real-word conversations and scenarios. This really help the students to improve their learning and make them acquire the language and use it in the everyday situations.

These language institutions had make a deep research in the field of linguistics to success in the language teaching because it is a good business to them to be successful teaching a language.
